The 1995–96 season marked a pivotal moment for Newcastle as Sir John Hall's investment enabled the club to make significant signings worldwide. With around £16 million spent on players like Les Ferdinand, David Ginola, Warren Barton, and Shaka Hislop before the season began, Kevin Keegan's team launched powerfully. In February 1996, Colombian striker Faustino Asprilla and England midfielder David Batty were added for a combined total of about £11 million.

A blazing start propelled Newcastle to the Premier League summit. They dominated the league from August until mid-March, boasting a 10-point lead over Manchester United by Christmas. Although they faltered with a 2–0 loss at Old Trafford on December 27, they still maintained a 12-point lead by January 20, 1996, setting them up as title contenders with 15 matches left. However, Manchester United, boosted by Eric Cantona's return, surged ahead. Despite Asprilla's remarkable debut performance leading to a 2–1 win against Middlesbrough, Newcastle lost five of their next eight matches. Key losses against West Ham and Manchester City followed, allowing Manchester United to snatch the lead.

Mind games by Alex Ferguson ignited the title race, culminating in Kevin Keegan's memorable outburst live on Sky Sports on April 29, 1996, after Newcastle's 1–0 win over Leeds United.
