Maradona bows out with tribute game

Diego Maradona treated his fans to two goals during his farewell match on 10 November 2001.

The Argentine football legend quit the game in 1997 but was involved in an all-star cast for one last game.

Maradona teamed up with the present Argentina national team and wore his famed number 10 jersey as his side beat a Rest of the World outfit 6-3. The match was played in front of 50,000 spectators at Boca Juniors' Bombonera stadium, where Maradona was the idol of fans during his spell at the club. Pablo Aimar scored twice, along with Maradona, and Claudio Lopez and Lucas Castroman got the other goals for Argentina. Davor Suker, Cantona and Rene Higuita scored for the Rest of the World.

But Maradona was the main attraction and he showed glimpses of the magic with which he wowed football audiences during his playing career. His first goal came via a suspicious penalty from which Maradona scored before tearing off his Argentine jersey to reveal a Boca Juniors shirt underneath.

Maradona's second penalty signalled the end of proceedings.

"I'm never going to forget this," said Maradona. "It was an incredible experience.

"I could never have expected so much."

Reebok squeezed one last home design in before its short contract with Argentina ended and opted for a modern twist on the famous light blue and white stripes. Black was still a no-go though, with navy blue providing a key contrast colour. Also worn with the socks from the previous home kit.
